Math Groups and Homework Changes

Thanks to the addition of Terra to our grade 5/6 numeracy team, starting this morning we are delivering the math program in smaller focus groups from Monday to Thursday each week. What this means effectively is that we now have four morning math groups between Maggie, Tiiu, Terra, and Ray which are made up of students from all three 5/6 classes. This approach will provide the students with an opportunity to work with a wider variety of their peers, in more reduced numbers, and with more direct assistance. Math on Fridays for all Room 308 students will take place in our own class.
Homework will take on a slightly different look now that four seperate teachers are delivering the math curriculum. Each student will have a homework book that now will mainly revolve around math that is being done in the class, with the possible addition of cursive work as well. Reading responses will continue to be regular weekly work that is expected of all students, and additional assignments will come in for social studies or language from time to time. As this is a bit of a transition we expect the schedule to be a bit off for the first few days of adjusting to this new program, but we will be into the swing of things in no time. Currently the students are expected to go straight to class each morning for attendance, fifteen minutes of morning programming, and then off to their math groups. If you have any questions regarding this please contact me. Regards, Ray

sounds like a great program, i witnessed it in maggie's class this morning (it was great to see ray's class mixed in there) and the small groups really work well

i like how churchill can change and grow, adapt and accommodate different styles of learning.
