Homework and other important things....

Hello from Room 308! This is the start of our second FULL week of classes, and it looks like it will shape up to be a fun filled one. To start off let's talk about our homework...
So far we have had our reading responses for homework. The first week we had some excellent efforts, and 23 of the 30 students in the class handed them in. Well done! This past week we talked more about expectations, and looked at examples of what we should be aiming for in class. On top of this everyone was told that they should start keeping a Reading Response Log at the start of each week's work. It should look kind of like this
Date Title Pages
Mon Harry Potter... Pg 34-42
Tues Owl Mag Pg 12-30
etc.
The idea is that they record what they are reading each day, and they are to respond ONCE to one thing that they read each week. Some forgot this, some were a bit confused. Generally by the third week of responses they figure it out.
Grade 6's were told that they need to include a bibliography entry for the book they respond to each week, as they were doing at the end of last year. Each of them has list of exemplars which they glued into their response books.
We had 20 of our 30 students turn their responses in this week, so try and remind your children to make sure they get them done and bring them in by Friday this week.
We will be adding a homework duotang with some math review work and some work with cursive in it this week. It needs to be completed and returned by Thursday of each week. There are explanations included with each sheet, but if any questions arise students are encouraged to let me know on Tuesday so we have time to work things out.
The Terry Fox Run for Churchill will be taking place this Friday at Dovercourt Park. The forms went home a week ago, and were due back by this Monday. If you have not signed one and sent it in please ask your child to pick up another one and return it ASAP so we can prepare our lists for the trip to Dovercourt. We will need walkers and volunteers to keep the children organized and motivated. Our run will follow a similar format to last year, with it taking place in the middle of the day, followed by our second nutrition break in the park (student will bring their lunches) and then a walk back to school for the last block of the day.
We are starting to see some volunteer faces in the classroom, and this has been a great help for everyone. Our first readers went out to spend some time reading aloud with a volunteer this past week, and everyone is asking when they are going to get their turn. I set a modest goal of getting everyone an opportunity to read aloud once this term, and it would be great to try and reach this as soon as possible so we can look to improve upon it. If you have time at your disposal let me know and we can arrange to have you in.
Similarly I put the idea out there at our parent meeting that I was looking with parents, friends, and family members who may have some areas of expertise available to share with our class. I spoke with a few people in passing, but if you are interested in this please send me an email so we can look at making some solid plans to get you in to share with the class. Currently I am looking for anyone who works with space technology in any way, and would feel comfortable talking about what they do and how they got involved in it, or anyone who is working with renewable energy/recycling/the green movement and could come to talk about their interests in conservation. Let me know.
Finally, we are getting into more changeable weather, and with that comes the need for students to have appropriate clothing available. We will be outside for DPA at least twice each week, and as much as three or four times. Students must come to school dressed for the weather at all times. In addition they need indoor shoes that they can change into after they get into class. This was a bit of an issue on Friday when it rained on us, and it will continue to be one as the weather turns over the coming weeks.
Thanks for your support so far. If you find yourself in the school swing by to check out our "picture stories" or license plate artwork in the hall on the third floor. Regards, Ray
