Today in our class we discussed the third annual Wear Pink Day, and what the meaning behind it was. We read an article (the link is below) that covered the event at a Nova Scotia H.S. in 2007, which sparked the entire movement. The movement is a student initiated anti-bullying awareness campaign that grew from their response to homophobic insults used at their school towards one grade 9 boy who wore a pink shirt to school. We discussed the situation, and how the people involved might have felt in that situation, and how the students, who decided to wear pink the next day to show their feelings about bullying, really made a difference with one small action. We clearly discussed the language that was used, and how labels are wrong, no matter how they are being directed (in fun, jest, anger, or retaliation). The students were quite thoughtful in their reflections on the topic both in our discussion, and in their writing. Check out the Wear Pink Day website below, as well as links to the CBC articles.
