We are now on our third week of Literacy Log entries. There have been some great responses, and some challenges among the class. Each week they are recording what they are reading each day in a Reading Log that they draw up in a quick table with headings for Date, Title, and Pages Read. Right now we are focused on summarizing, so they have been writing a summary each week of what they read on one of the days this week. I sent them all home with the same thing to summarize this week. We are focusing on the organization of their summary, including Titles, Date, and breaking seperate ideas into seperate paragraphs. They all looked at examples today, and it should be pretty clear what is expected. This being their third summary I am hoping for success across the board.
Last week we had the second part of our two part field trip to Baobab Tree. We created beautiful memory boxes with African patterning and symbols on them. We even got to play some games in the park like we did the first week. both trips went exceptionally well, with everyone getting a chance to get their hands on drums and sticks for a huge drumming circle (33 people!) and some fantastic instructions from Kathy Armstrong the first week. Kathy was able to teach the class a number of pretty complicated patterns, which we put together to form a beautiful, and complicated, larger piece. Kathy even admitted that she was impressed with what we were able to accomplish in such a relatively short time. It would take some groups a few weeks to work up to what we did. We then put the drums away and got into the circle for some traditional Ghanian dancing moves, and I have to say that they students had some great form (the adults along for the trip were another matter though!). It was great fun, and really nice to see the whole class coming together and performing like that.
This past friday Maureen Clark led the class through a fantastic art workshop where they explored traditional patterning and symbol traditions from the Ashanti region of Ghana. The boxes they created looked amazing. We will have the finished products in class later this week, and we are excited to see how they turned out. It was a focused, creative morning, and everyone had a great deal of success with their memory box. A big thanks to Kathy, Maureen, and Baobab Tree for inviting us to their studio for this fabulous opportunity.
