We were successful in getting almost all of our Literacy Logs handed in last week, and there was some improvement in the summaries over the four weeks we did them. This week the class discussed our theme at length on Monday. The expectation for students in grade 5 and 6 is to read at home for 20 minutes each day. This is to continue, and they will still keep track of what they read on at least four days of the week in their reading log. We have gone over what this looks like each week. A table with columns for; Date/Title/Pages Read is how we are organizing this.
This week their Literacy Log entry is in the form of a "Letter to the Editor". We read a few on Monday, written in response to an article calling for Remembrance Day to be made into a statuatory holiday. Their letter is to state their opinion on whether or not Remembrance Day should be a school holiday. We discussed what this letter should have in it, and decided on a clear introduction, three supporting points, and a closing statement.
Next week's Literacy Log entry will also be a letter format, but with a different theme.
On another note, a notice went home last week regarding the Yoga workshop we have started. It will take place over the next three Mondays (we started this past Monday). As stated in the notice, the cost of the workshop is $4 each.
