Churchill has been singing the blues for the past week and a half, and not because we have anything to be sad about--just the opposite in fact. We have been lucky enough to be participating in the "Blues in the Schools" program this year, which has meant a week of one hour concerts each day last week where blues artists discussed the origin and structure of blues music, and played songs for us all to groove along to.
This week our class and Tiiu's has had the opportunity to get hands on workshops with a number of famous local blues musicians. Michael J. Brown is a blues musician from Montreal who has been working with our class to write and perform a number of songs, while getting a behind the scenes look at how blues music is put together and performed. Along with Micheal we have been lucky enough to have "The Mighty Popo", a local guitarist and world music performer also working us. Students from our class have been encouraged to bring in instruments, which Michael and Popo have helped to arrange in order to perform songs together as a group. This Friday from 1-2pm we will be performing our songs, as will Tiiu's class, in a special Blues in the Schools performance for the whole school in the gym (the students refer to it as Bluesapollooza) . Families are encouraged to come on out and check out the homegrown blues right here at Churchill.
