Internet Awareness

The unfortunate truth about today's world is that our students are less likely to run into predators on the street than they are in the safety of their own home while browsing on the internet. Many of our students each year report being victims of some sort of internet bullying or targeting. We will be engaging in an internet awareness workshop and discussion during the coming weeks. I was able to visit the Media Awareness Network offices (at the office of The Bear radio station) and pick up CD Roms for each student in the class. They will be bringing them home by early next week. Take the time to make sure your takes a look at the activities on them. They have cartoon adventures that students can interact with to make choices, and learn the possible outcomes of different internet scenarios. They are totally age appropriate, but I would strongly urge parents to look at them with their children. The truth is that children are more aware than most parents of the issues involved with the internet that revolve around privacy, bullying, stalking, etc. Take the time to check out the following site. It is hosted by the RCMP, and is the starting point for some of our discussions in class.
