I don't think I need to tell any of the parents from our class how fun the overnights were this past week. I am certain that the stories have already been told, and the fun moments re-lived a few times. Though both groups returned rather worn out and damp, the excitement and energy of the students was still there under the surface. Right up until the bus ride the sixes still were chasing each other around, chanting songs, and having a general blast, and I think it says something that every one of the grade fives showed up to school the morning after their trip. No matter how tired they were they wanted to be back at school to share their stories again with their peers. Anyhow, all this being said, I do know that getting information out of some of them at home is often like pulling teeth, so here are some things you may want to ask them about to get the conversations rolling...
- ask how to cure scurvy
- ask about the plants they found to refresh their breath
- how much does one get when trading in beaver, skunk, moose, or other assorted furs?
- why do we have so many starlings in North America?
- How can you tell one conifer from another?
- what does a salamander tadpole look like compared to a regular frog tadpole?
- Who is the king of Simon Says? (gr 6's only)
- how much fun is a campfire in the rain?
- How can you boil water for tea if you have no teapot?
- where did corn come from, and how do you use it if it is dried up?
- ask about Michael's magical ability to make 55 people wave their rear ends in the air and act like fools (gr 5's only)
- Ask if it is a good idea to put the woodstove on before bed
And in general just ask them if they would do it all again. I think the answer to that one is easy to guess. I just have to say that all feedback I have had from parent volunteers, from the staff at MacSkimming, and from Maggie, Holly, and Cheryl, has been overwhelmingly positive. The students all shone, and represented themselves in the most amazing way. An even better question is to ask those teachers and volunteers if they would go again. I know that they all would, thanks in most to the fantastic attitudes of the kids we had along on these trips. I just hope they all get some rest before school Monday...
