Terry Fox and Homework Fun!

If we all think sunny (or at least dry) thoughts we should have another successful Terry Fox Run this week. I have some outstanding forms for Liam, Malika, Matt and Evan. We will have some available at the office and in class tomorrow morning, so please try and get one of these in for your child. The run will be on, rain or shine, so I hope everyone comes ready for it.
This week we also have our Student Vote, and our school will be used as a polling station for the actual Provincial Election, so it should be an exciting week.
We have spent a couple of weeks preparing for the start of our homework program. Students have created Literacy Logs (we are thinking of re-naming them reading logs so as not to confuse with Media Literacy Scrapbooks - so stay posted on that one) and used a book that they have already read to get themselves started. In this they are recording a variety of information that they get from the books they will read this year. Each week they will have a writing task, connected to the reading that they are doing. It is expected that each child read 20 minutes each day in these grades. The log is where they will share what they are reading.
This week the task is to write a letter to one of the main characters in the story they are reading. We have reviewed and written letters already this year, so this should not be a challenge. They need a clear intro, and the body of the letter should ask questions and share reflections on what they read.
It will be interesting to see what results we get this week. These logs are due back on Friday.
We will repeat this message each day in class, so expect to see these logs at home, and remind your students to complete them. This should not be more than 20 - 30 minutes of writing for most students.
Regards, Ray
