Math Homework Assignment

This week we started a homework assignment that is due next week in class.  The students have been exploring the skills needed to complete this assignment.  Below is an overview, questions that need to be answered, and copies of the order form and catalogue we are using.  A labelled floor plan of the room is required, on graph paper.  All of this was provided in class, and extra copies are available for those who need it.

Extreme Bedroom Makeover

What kind of room will you design?

Today is the day for you to get your creative math and measurement juices flowing!  Your challenge is to design your own dream bedroom.  What kind of bedroom design theme will you choose…Tye Dye…Cars…Safari?  What will the dimensions be.  What colors will you choose…Blue…Red… Purple?  The choices are endless, so you need to decide on a theme for your “Extreme Bedroom Makeover.” 

Use the Design Brainstorm Organizer to make a list of your ideas, designs, and start to shape your dream room. 

Once you have decided on your theme and have sharpened your math design skills, you will need to complete the order form using the “Specialty Designs For Less” Price List so you can purchase your supplies.  Using your mathematical design abilities, you must come up with items needed to complete your dream bedroom on a budget of $1500. 

Your purchase must include a bed (with bedspread or comforter), dresser, and a desk and chair to do your schoolwork at.  You need to paint and carpet your room so be careful how large you make your room. 

Don’t forget to include shipping charges and do not exceed the $1500 spending limit.

 If you want to include windows and doors in your calculations make sure to subtract these areas from the total wall area in your calculations.

You but must complete the attached forms and submit a floor plan to make the design submission official.

8. One can of paint covers 28 square meters.  How many cans will you need for your room?

9. How much does it cost to paint and carpet your room?  (Add this to the order form)

 

10.  What additional items will you purchase to complete your dream bedroom makeover?  On the design order form record the items you wish to purchase, their price per unit, the number you require, and the total cost per item.  Once all of your choices have been recorded find the full cost of your dream bedroom by adding up all of the totals.

 

11.  All good designers need to draw up a floor-plan.  On graph paper draw the outline of your room and the floor plan of furniture and other items.  Keep your design to scale.  Remember that if you decide to use colour markers should not be used for math work.
