Just a quick reminder that our overnight forms and money are due back this Thursday (tomorrow). We need to get our final numbers in soon, so we can tally for food, and get the museum's staff arranged for programming.
Heads up to all potential School of Rockers...we are still trying to organize a potential SofR 5 for the spring, but in the meantime we will meet with interested performers this Tuesday in Shellie's room at second recess to rehearse a couple of songs for our Remembrance Day sharing that is less than a month away.
Everyone received a handout for our major science assignment for this unit. I will include below the basic info (I can't attach it for some reason). The version the students have includes a detailed rubric. Look for the yellow (gr 5) and salmon (gr 6) coloured sheets in your child's agenda. The date we picked in class to hand this brochure project in was Oct 27 (just before the overnight).
This week we are only doing a reading response due to the extra science assignment. They should have topics choosen and research started by the end of this weekend.
Galactic Travel Agent
As a result of your incredible understanding of our solar system you have been hired by the Galactic Travel Agency. As your first assignment you have been asked to create a brochure that features a travel destination within our solar system. The goal is to attract Earthlings and space aliens to your destination for a vacation.
The way that your boss wants you to attract customers to your destinations is by promoting the unique opportunities that the planet affords. Be sure to explain fully the important atmospheric conditions, and how they make this destination the perfect spot for a variety of activities. If there are certain times dangers present on the planet, or in the vicinity be sure to mention it in your brochure. You do not want to surprise your customers by sending them off to the planet during an asteroid shower.
Factual information concerning the planet must be included (see element section of rubric) but be creative about this assignment. Obviously there are no accommodations on the planets in our solar system, but use some imagination. Also, the activities that you advertise on your planet should take into account the local characteristics. Fun in the sun on Pluto, or ice fishing on Mercury would not make sense.
The use of effective writing techniques is an important thing to think about when writing your brochure. Dull, boring sentences copied out of the encyclopedia, or off the internet are not wanted. Make your brochure fun and eye catching by using:
Alliterations – several words in a row that start with the same letter Slogans
Similes - a comparison using like or as Rhymes
Exaggerations – saying things that stretch the truth Sentences with questions
Etc.
This brochure must not only be eye catching, it must also be accurate. The finished product should be neat, colourful, and make people want to get away from the Earth for a while and experience what your destination has to offer.
Conservation Corporation
As a result of your incredible understanding of the sources of energy available to our society, and the technology currently being used to conserve it, you have been hired by the Conservation Corporation advertising agency. As your first assignment you have been asked to create a brochure that features a major source of energy, or a conservation based technology. The goal is to promote your energy choice, or “green” technology.
The way that your boss wants you to attract customers to your energy choice or “green” technology is by promoting the unique benefits that it affords, compared with the alternatives. Remember that not everyone understands this topic as well as you so be sure to explain fully the details of this energy source or technology, and how it is the ideal choice for people in the modern world. Now honesty is the best policy, so try to mention some of the drawbacks that this choice might have for potential customers, but do your best to convince them that this is still a good option for them.
Background information concerning the energy choice or “green” technology must be included. Details to consider might be the origins, inventor, fun facts, main areas where this energy or technology is in use today, etc. Be creative about this assignment. Obviously there are limits to the topics you will choose to advertise, but use some imagination. Also, the topic that you advertise should be promoted with some kind of fun “hook” or slogan. You could even create a company or product name, but make sure that the content of your brochure makes sense. ‘Windy Westboro Windmills’ might work, but ‘Toronto Tidal Power’ would not because there are no tides in Toronto.
