Celebration Reflection and Others

Our Stone Soup celebration with our reading buddies was a big hit with everyone. Thanks to all of the families who sent in cut up veggies, and extra thanks for the bread that was home baked by a few families to go along with the soup! I could say a ton about the event, or share the comments I heard from the volunteers and other parents or staff that witnessed it, but the following comments from students in our class really say it in a much better way. I was proud of how they all helped out their little buddies, asked them questions, and really did themselves proud as role models. Here is what they said:

It was great to get to know our reading buddies better

It was loud, because we were building communities (right from K.B.'s mouth)

It smelled yummy

It was fun becoming soup Jedi's

It tased delicious.

The volunteers did a great job

It was filling

It was great how everyone brought in veggies to make the soup

It was great learning more about our buddies and getting along

It was ACTUALLY stone soup, with REAL stones in it! That was cool!

It was good to see the little kinders eating all those vegetables.

I learned that MY buddy does not like vegetables!

I think the buddies had lots of fun.

Some "others" to keep in mind this week:
We skate at Dulude this Friday at 10:10. The bus leaves around twenty minutes before that.
We are sharing our big advetisement responses in class this week, so there is NO READING RESPONSE this week. Instead students will be asked to share a favourite book of theirs in a book talk on Thursday and Friday.
Thursday we will have a day of exploration. We have arranged to get the Scientists in Schools to work with both the 5's and the 6's in two different half day workshops. The 5/6 team has arranged to cover the cost of this very exciting program. The second activity on that day will be a fun introduction to cultures, and how they form.
Our graphing and survey project from last week is due this Friday. We will reveiw the main features of a line graph again tomorrow, and the class will have had many examples to go by once they have all their data collected.
Reports are going home next week, and we will be scheduling student led conferences for the following week. These conferences are an opportunity for the students to share what they have been experiencing this year, so if you feel you will need to make time to speak with Ray on any topic please get in touch so that this can be arranged.
Dec 4th is a PD day.
Today we had a special presentation in class by Fiona's mom, Kate, on the Story of Food. We had a good little talk about the origins of the food we eat, and the declining biodiversity amongst the kinds of food we grow for consumption. Ask your child about it. They probably know some cool facts about apples and potatoes now. You can check out the video we watched at the following link.
