Today was a great day for the students of Room 308. Everyone should be proud of how well they presented themselves in our sharing this morning, and how respectful they were at the ceremony this afternoon.
We were the class in charge of organizing the sharing, introducing the people who were presenting, etc. In addition our class ran a shared reading activity where they took turns reading a story to the whole school (off the projector screen) and then asked the audience to answer some questions. They were fantastic. I was very proud of them all. Everyone who asked to speak got a chance to present, and you would never have guessed that they were speaking in front of four hundred people. Several students from our class also sang with the Junior Choir, who did Blowin in the Wind and Peace train. It was a great ceremony overall, and the class had some great reflections on the presentations that were done by the other classes. I think they really enjoyed it overall.
Our trip to the cenotaph was really special too. The first time I took a class down to the annual Westboro ceremony we were the first school group they had show up to the event in ten years or so they said. Since then we have gone back each year either as a class, with the other 5/6's, and this year with all the 3/4 and 5/6 classes. The folks who put the event on really were impressed, not only with having all the young people come out for it, but also with how well behaved they were throughout the whole thing. It was a good hour of standing in the very cool temperatures of today (beautiful, but cold after an hour), but the students did not complain, and they stood and took it all in. I think they were really impressed with the vets and their medals, the colour guard, and the marching band. They also were excited to see big local names like Paul Dewar, Jim Watson, Yasir Naqvi, and Larry OBrien.
Today was a great day.
